Description

Bright color and little discoveries make “Shaman” by Penelope Bushman a joy to explore. A stylized figure stands beside a slender staff, wearing an ochre garment filled with rows of blue marks and a bold red-and-blue collar. A colorful beaded necklace and beads along the garment’s blue edge add dimension, while a painted spiral rests in the warm, earthy background.

A golden-yellow sky brings a sunny warmth to this miniature oil painting. Textured brushwork and hand-sewn beading reward a closer look, giving its 6" x 6" size plenty of personality. Gallery wrapped, it’s a lovely accent for a small wall or a colorful addition to a favorite grouping of artwork.

About the Artist

A smiling woman with long red hair and blue eyes wearing a bright turquoise button-up shirt, photographed indoors against a warm-toned decorative background.

Penelope grew up surrounded by the beautiful sand dunes of northern Indiana where she began painting watercolors of the beach at a young age. She studied fine art at the Academy of Art in Chicago. After completing her training, she moved to Arizona and was inspired by the rich beauty of the southwest and its native history.

Penelope translates the ancient imagery into colorful contemporary portrayals of shamans and sentinels. She is "intrigued by the shaman figure depicted in petroglyphs for all it symbolizes: healing, wisdom and the quest for spiritual connection."

Penelope's original oil on canvas paintings display her love of color and texture. The Shamans gowns portray beautiful fabric designs and include interesting elements of texture and often hand-strung bead work.

Penelope welcomes commissions and would be delighted to create an original oil painting tailored to your preferred size and color palette.
