Description

Three figures, richly patterned garments, and a star-filled desert sky draw you into “Shaman’s Tradition” by Penelope Bushman. Seen from behind, the figures are arranged at different heights against warm sandstone mesas and sweeping earth-toned slopes. Deep blue, soft gray, and coral-red garments each have their own intricate patterns, with hand-sewn beads adding dimension and small points of light.

A painted spiral rests in the landscape, while layered textures and colorful details invite you to linger. This 36" x 24" oil on canvas balances the warmth of the desert with the stillness of a deep blue night sky. Gallery wrapped, it offers a welcoming focal point with plenty to discover each time you return to it.

About the Artist

A smiling woman with long red hair and blue eyes wearing a bright turquoise button-up shirt, photographed indoors against a warm-toned decorative background.

Penelope grew up surrounded by the beautiful sand dunes of northern Indiana where she began painting watercolors of the beach at a young age. She studied fine art at the Academy of Art in Chicago. After completing her training, she moved to Arizona and was inspired by the rich beauty of the southwest and its native history.

Penelope translates the ancient imagery into colorful contemporary portrayals of shamans and sentinels. She is "intrigued by the shaman figure depicted in petroglyphs for all it symbolizes: healing, wisdom and the quest for spiritual connection."

Penelope's original oil on canvas paintings display her love of color and texture. The Shamans gowns portray beautiful fabric designs and include interesting elements of texture and often hand-strung bead work.

Penelope welcomes commissions and would be delighted to create an original oil painting tailored to your preferred size and color palette.
