Description

Cool blues meet warm earth tones in “Shaman” by Penelope Bushman. Seen from behind, a stylized figure holds a slender staff and wears a pale blue-gray garment decorated with deep blue circles and rows of short blue marks. An olive-green band, small golden-yellow accents, and hand-sewn beading bring extra color and dimension to the shoulders.

A reddish spiral stands out against the textured ochre background, offering another detail to enjoy up close. Measuring 6" x 6", this miniature oil painting has a quiet presence and plenty of personality. Its gallery-wrapped presentation makes it a lovely accent for a small wall or a favorite grouping of artwork.

About the Artist

A smiling woman with long red hair and blue eyes wearing a bright turquoise button-up shirt, photographed indoors against a warm-toned decorative background.

Penelope grew up surrounded by the beautiful sand dunes of northern Indiana where she began painting watercolors of the beach at a young age. She studied fine art at the Academy of Art in Chicago. After completing her training, she moved to Arizona and was inspired by the rich beauty of the southwest and its native history.

Penelope translates the ancient imagery into colorful contemporary portrayals of shamans and sentinels. She is "intrigued by the shaman figure depicted in petroglyphs for all it symbolizes: healing, wisdom and the quest for spiritual connection."

Penelope's original oil on canvas paintings display her love of color and texture. The Shamans gowns portray beautiful fabric designs and include interesting elements of texture and often hand-strung bead work.

Penelope welcomes commissions and would be delighted to create an original oil painting tailored to your preferred size and color palette.
